Yet minerals are involved in nearly every aspect of human biology. They help your body build, communicate, move, and adapt. While they’re often mentioned alongside vitamins, minerals are a completely different group of nutrients with their own essential roles.

Understanding what minerals are is one more step toward understanding how the body really works.

What Are Minerals?

Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic elements found in the earth. Plants absorb them from soil and water, animals obtain them through their diet, and we obtain them through the foods we eat and, when appropriate, dietary supplements.

Unlike vitamins, minerals cannot be produced by the body. They must be obtained from external sources to support normal physiological function.

Although required in relatively small amounts, minerals participate in countless biological processes every day.

Major Minerals and Trace Minerals

Not all minerals are needed in the same amounts.

Major minerals are required in larger quantities and include:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Phosphorus

Trace minerals are needed in much smaller amounts but are no less important. They include:

  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Iodine
  • Manganese

among others.

The amount your body requires does not determine how important a mineral is. Both major and trace minerals play essential roles in supporting normal health.

What Do Minerals Actually Do?

Minerals don’t have one single job.

Together, they help support many of the body’s normal biological functions, including:

  • Building and maintaining bones and teeth.
  • Supporting normal muscle contraction and relaxation.
  • Helping nerves communicate throughout the body.
  • Maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Supporting oxygen transport.
  • Assisting hundreds of enzyme-driven reactions involved in everyday metabolism.

Every second, these processes take place without conscious effort, and minerals are part of what makes them possible.

Where Do We Get Minerals?

Minerals come from the foods we eat. Different foods provide different minerals, which is why variety matters.

For example:

  • Dairy foods and fortified alternatives are well-known sources of calcium.
  • Leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds can contribute magnesium.
  • Meat, seafood, beans, and lentils provide iron.
  • Seafood, meat, legumes, nuts, and seeds are common sources of zinc.
  • Fruits and vegetables also contribute important minerals such as potassium.

A varied dietary pattern helps provide the wide range of minerals the body depends on every day.

Why Minerals Are Receiving More Attention

Even with greater awareness of nutrition, many people do not consistently consume recommended amounts of certain minerals through their usual dietary patterns.

Highly processed foods, restrictive eating patterns, food preferences, and individual nutritional needs can all influence mineral intake.

That doesn’t automatically mean someone needs a supplement.

It does highlight the importance of understanding where nutrients come from and why a varied, nutrient-rich diet remains the foundation of good nutrition. When dietary intake falls short or individual needs increase, a healthcare professional may recommend supplementation.

Minerals Don’t Work Alone

One of the most fascinating aspects of nutrition is that nutrients rarely act independently.

Minerals often work alongside vitamins and other minerals to support normal biological processes.

For example:

  • Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, while magnesium participates in the enzymatic processes involved in activating vitamin D.
  • Iron supports oxygen transport, and vitamin C can enhance the absorption of non-heme iron from plant-based foods.

Some minerals can also compete for absorption when consumed in large amounts at the same time, which is one reason thoughtful formulation and appropriate use of supplements matter.

Many people choose supplements by looking for a familiar ingredient or the highest number on a label.
